Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Marine Biologist to join our dynamic team in Swansea. This role involves contributing to crucial research, monitoring, and conservation efforts across the Welsh coastline and surrounding waters. You will be instrumental in collecting and analysing data, supporting policy development, and engaging with local communities to promote marine conservation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct marine ecological surveys and fieldwork (intertidal, subtidal, vessel-based).
- Collect, process, and analyze biological samples and environmental data.
- Prepare detailed scientific reports, presentations, and publications for various audiences.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of marine conservation strategies and policy advice.
- Engage with stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and academic partners.
- Operate and maintain specialist field equipment, ensuring data quality and adherence to safety protocols.
- Assist in grant writing and fundraising activities to support project continuity and expansion.
Required Skills
- Strong background in marine biology, ecology, or a related scientific field.
- Proven experience (minimum 2 years) in marine fieldwork, including boat-based surveys and intertidal sampling techniques.
- Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, SPSS, ArcGIS) and statistical methods.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for technical reports, public engagement, and presentations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Full UK driving license and willingness to travel for fieldwork.
- Physical fitness and ability to undertake fieldwork in challenging marine and coastal environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's or PhD degree in Marine Biology, Oceanography, or a related discipline.
- Experience with specific marine taxonomic groups common to Welsh waters (e.g., cetaceans, benthic invertebrates).
- PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certification or equivalent, with active dive experience.
- Knowledge of Welsh marine policy, legislation, and conservation designations.
- Experience in community engagement, environmental education, or volunteer management.
