Job Description
The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of York is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated University Lecturer to join our esteemed faculty. This role involves delivering high-quality teaching, undertaking cutting-edge research, and contributing to the academic life of the department and university. We are looking for an individual passionate about inspiring the next generation of scientists and innovators, committed to excellence in both teaching and research. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape curriculum, supervise student projects, and pursue their research interests within a supportive and collaborative environment. This is an on-site position based at our main campus in York.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deliver engaging lectures, seminars, and practical sessions to undergraduate and postgraduate students in Biological Sciences.
- Design and update course materials, syllabi, and assessment methods aligned with current scientific advancements.
- Supervise student dissertations, research projects, and practical work, providing constructive feedback and mentorship.
- Conduct high-quality, impactful research in your specialized area within Biological Sciences, leading to publications in reputable academic journals and conferences.
- Apply for and secure external research funding to support your research program.
- Act as a personal tutor, providing academic and pastoral support to students.
- Contribute to the administrative duties of the department and university, including committee work and programme leadership.
- Participate in outreach activities, student recruitment initiatives, and public engagement events.
- Engage in continuous professional development and maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in your field and in pedagogical practices.
Required Skills
- PhD in a relevant Biological Sciences discipline (e.g., Biochemistry, Genetics, Ecology, Neuroscience, Microbiology).
- Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at university level, with a strong commitment to student learning.
- A strong record of research publications commensurate with experience.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging diverse audiences.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students and colleagues.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in supervising postgraduate research students.
- A track record of securing research grants or external funding.
- Experience with blended learning or online teaching methodologies.
- Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Experience contributing to curriculum development and innovation.
