Job Description
The City of Cambridge Department of Traffic Management is seeking a dedicated and responsible Traffic Warden / Control Officer to join our team. This vital role offers the opportunity for independent work and comes with a great pension plan, reflecting our commitment to our employees’ long-term well-being. As a Traffic Warden, you will play a crucial part in maintaining the flow of traffic, ensuring public safety, and upholding parking regulations across our vibrant city. Working independently, you will be responsible for patrolling assigned areas, identifying and addressing parking violations, and assisting the public with inquiries related to traffic and parking. This position requires excellent observational skills, sound judgment, and a commitment to serving the community. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure you are fully equipped for success in this important role.
Key Responsibilities
- Patrolling designated areas on foot or by vehicle to monitor parking compliance.
- Issuing citations for parking violations in accordance with city ordinances.
- Assisting with traffic control during special events, emergencies, or peak hours as needed.
- Responding to public inquiries and providing accurate information regarding parking regulations and city services.
- Documenting observations and preparing detailed reports of daily activities and incidents.
- Collaborating with law enforcement and other city departments to ensure public safety and order.
- Operating and maintaining handheld enforcement devices and other related equipment.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid Massachusetts Driver's License and a clean driving record
- Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and make fair decisions
- Physical ability to stand, walk, and work outdoors in various weather conditions for extended periods
- Basic computer literacy for report writing and operating enforcement devices
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a public safety, customer service, or enforcement role
- Familiarity with Cambridge city geography and traffic regulations
- CPR and First Aid certification
