Job Description

Wates Group is seeking a diligent and experienced Concrete Inspector – Building Compliance to join our growing team in Newcastle upon Tyne. In this crucial role, you will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of concrete quality and compliance with all relevant building codes, specifications, and industry regulations across various construction projects. You will play a vital part in maintaining structural integrity and project safety, working closely with project managers, site teams, and external stakeholders. This is an exciting opportunity for a detail-oriented professional passionate about quality assurance in construction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough inspections of concrete placement, curing, and finishing procedures on site.
  • Verify that concrete mixes meet specified requirements and perform slump, air content, and temperature tests.
  • Collect and prepare concrete samples for laboratory testing (e.g., compression strength).
  • Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and relevant building codes.
  • Identify and document any non-compliance issues or defects, providing recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Liaise effectively with project managers, engineers, contractors, and material suppliers.
  • Maintain accurate records of all inspections, tests, and observations.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and contribute to project documentation.
  • Ensure adherence to health, safety, and environmental standards on site.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to site personnel regarding concrete quality control.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (36 months) as a Concrete Inspector, Quality Control Inspector, or similar role in the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of concrete materials, mix designs, placement techniques, and curing methods.
  • Familiarity with British Standards (BS EN) and relevant building regulations related to concrete.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents.
  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in using inspection tools and testing equipment.
  • Valid UK driving license and ability to travel to various sites within the region.
  • CSCS Card (Construction Skills Certification Scheme).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Relevant vocational qualification or degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Certification in concrete inspection (e.g., ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, or similar UK equivalent).
  • Experience with digital inspection software or construction management platforms.
  • Knowledge of sustainable concrete practices and materials.
