Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Astronomer to join our dynamic research team at Plymouth University. The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing research projects in areas such as exoplanetary science, stellar evolution, galactic dynamics, or cosmology. This role involves conducting original research, analyzing observational data, developing theoretical models, and publishing findings in peer-reviewed journals. You will also have opportunities to mentor students and contribute to teaching activities within the department. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct original research in astronomy, leading to publications in high-impact scientific journals.
  • Design and execute observational programs using ground-based or space-based telescopes.
  • Analyze complex astronomical datasets using advanced computational techniques.
  • Develop and refine theoretical models to interpret observational results.
  • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
  • Collaborate effectively with colleagues, researchers, and students within the department and external institutions.
  • Contribute to grant writing and securing external funding for research projects.
  • Participate in departmental seminars, workshops, and outreach activities.
  • Potentially supervise PhD students and contribute to undergraduate teaching.

Required Skills

  • PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, Physics, or a closely related field.
  • Proven track record of publishing research in peer-reviewed astronomical journals.
  • Expertise in data analysis techniques relevant to astronomical observations (e.g., Python, IDL, IRAF).
  • Strong understanding of astronomical principles and theories.
  • Proficiency in scientific computing and programming.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Postdoctoral research experience.
  • Experience with specific observational facilities or data archives (e.g., ESO, NASA archives).
  • Familiarity with high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
  • Experience in mentoring junior researchers or teaching at the university level.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract research funding.
