Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Neonatal Assistant to join our specialized Neonatal Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. In this crucial role, you will work closely with nurses and other healthcare professionals to provide essential support and care to newborn babies and their families. Your responsibilities will involve assisting with daily patient care, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and providing empathetic support, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene and comfort for our vulnerable patients. This position is ideal for individuals with a genuine interest in neonatal care who are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of infants and their families.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist nursing staff with the daily care of neonates, including feeding, changing, and comforting babies.
  • Monitor babies under supervision, observing and reporting any changes in their condition to the nursing team.
  • Maintain cleanliness and hygiene within the Neonatal Unit, including cleaning equipment, incubators, and patient areas.
  • Support parents and families by providing practical assistance and emotional support, under the guidance of nurses.
  • Help with the preparation of feeding equipment and ensure adequate stock levels of supplies and linen.
  • Document observations and care activities accurately and promptly in patient records.
  • Ensure a safe and nurturing environment for all babies and their families.
  • Participate in unit meetings and training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a sensitive and empathetic approach.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Reliability and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic IT literacy for record-keeping.
  • Ability to follow instructions accurately and work under pressure.
  • A genuine desire to care for infants and support their families.
  • Minimum of 12 months experience in a care-related setting (e.g., healthcare assistant, nursery assistant, domiciliary care).

Preferred Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a hospital environment, particularly in a maternity or paediatric setting.
  • Basic First Aid qualification.
