Job Description

The Illinois Department of Transportation is seeking dedicated individuals for an Entry Level Weigh Station Inspector position. This is an exciting opportunity for individuals with no prior experience to begin a fulfilling career in public service. As an Entry Level Weigh Station Inspector, you will receive comprehensive training to perform essential duties related to commercial vehicle compliance and safety. You will play a crucial role in ensuring that commercial vehicles operating on Illinois roadways adhere to state and federal regulations regarding weight, dimensions, and safety standards. This position is ideal for those who are detail-oriented, possess a strong work ethic, and are committed to public safety. Full training will be provided to equip you with all necessary knowledge and skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive comprehensive training on state and federal commercial motor vehicle regulations, including weight limits, dimensions, and safety standards.
  • Operate weigh station scales and equipment to accurately measure commercial vehicle weights.
  • Inspect commercial vehicles for compliance with permit requirements and safety regulations.
  • Document inspection findings, issue citations, or warnings for violations as instructed after training.
  • Assist with traffic control and direct commercial vehicles into the weigh station.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and weigh station activities.
  • Communicate effectively with commercial vehicle operators, explaining regulations and procedures.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development programs.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
  • Collaborate with senior inspectors and other law enforcement agencies as needed.
