Job Description
The City of Kitchener is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as a Trainee Weights & Measures Inspector. This is an exciting entry-level opportunity for someone passionate about public service and consumer protection. You will receive comprehensive, full training in all aspects of weights and measures regulations, inspection techniques, and enforcement procedures. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will learn to inspect a wide range of weighing and measuring devices used in commerce, ensuring accuracy and compliance with provincial and federal standards. This role is crucial for upholding fairness in trade and building public trust within our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program to learn all aspects of weights and measures inspection and enforcement.
- Shadow senior inspectors during routine and complaint-based inspections of commercial weighing and measuring devices.
- Assist in the verification and testing of devices such as scales, gas pumps, and retail scanners for accuracy.
- Learn to identify and document non-compliant devices or practices.
- Understand and apply relevant provincial and federal legislation and regulations.
- Develop skills in preparing inspection reports and maintaining accurate records.
- Communicate effectively with business owners and the public regarding compliance requirements.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and departmental procedures.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Ontario Class G Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to tasks.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to learn and interpret technical regulations and standards.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Commitment to public service and ethical conduct.
- Physical ability to lift and carry equipment, and to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in a technical field, science, or public administration.
- Experience in a customer service or public-facing role.
- Familiarity with the Kitchener area and local businesses.
- Basic understanding of mathematics and physics principles.
