Job Description

The Ville de Rimouski – Service des Travaux Publics is offering an exciting apprenticeship opportunity for a Trainee Fleet Mechanic. This role is perfect for individuals with no prior experience who are eager to learn and develop a specialized skill set in maintaining government vehicles and heavy equipment. You will work alongside experienced certified mechanics, receiving hands-on training and mentorship in a dynamic public sector environment. This apprenticeship is designed to provide you with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to become a fully qualified fleet mechanic, contributing directly to essential municipal services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist certified mechanics with routine maintenance and repairs of various municipal vehicles and equipment.
  • Learn to perform basic diagnostic checks and identify mechanical issues.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance tasks, including oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid checks.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work environment in the garage.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Document work performed and parts used under supervision.
  • Attend required apprenticeship training sessions and courses.
  • Continuously develop mechanical knowledge and practical skills.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent (or in progress).
  • Strong interest in mechanics and automotive technology.
  • Willingness to learn and a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively in a team.
  • Basic understanding of safety procedures.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license (or willingness to obtain within a probationary period).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience with basic hand tools or vehicle maintenance as a hobby.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a pre-apprenticeship program related to automotive or heavy equipment mechanics.
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is an asset.
