Job Description
Are you passionate about public health and environmental protection? The City of Moncton is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as a Trainee Environmental Health Inspector. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals with no prior experience in environmental health. We will provide comprehensive training and mentorship to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to become a competent and confident Environmental Health Inspector. You will learn to assess and mitigate risks related to food safety, water quality, waste management, housing standards, and other public health concerns.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in a structured training program covering all aspects of environmental health inspection and regulation.
- Shadow experienced inspectors on site visits to learn practical application of environmental health principles.
- Assist with routine inspections of food establishments, public facilities, and residential properties under supervision.
- Learn to investigate complaints related to environmental health and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Contribute to public education initiatives on environmental health and safety best practices.
- Develop a thorough understanding of relevant municipal bylaws, provincial acts, and federal regulations.
- Prepare clear and concise reports and maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations.
- Attend workshops and seminars to continuously enhance knowledge and skills in environmental health.
- Collaborate with other municipal departments and external agencies as required.
Required Skills
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage with diverse community members.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- A keen interest in public health, environmental protection, and community safety.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Valid New Brunswick Class 5 driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for fieldwork.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new regulations and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field such as Environmental Studies, Public Health, Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline is an asset.
- Bilingualism (English and French) is considered a strong asset.
