Job Description

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is seeking a motivated and dedicated individual to join our team as a Trainee Arson Investigator. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals with no prior experience in fire investigation. You will receive comprehensive, structured training and mentorship from experienced professionals, equipping you with the essential skills and knowledge required to become a competent Arson Investigator. You will play a crucial role in determining the origin and cause of fires, particularly those suspected of being deliberately set, supporting criminal investigations, and contributing to arson prevention strategies within the community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in a structured training program covering fire dynamics, scene preservation, evidence collection, and interview techniques.
  • Assist qualified Arson Investigators at fire scenes, learning practical investigation methods under direct supervision.
  • Document findings accurately, including photographic evidence, sketches, and detailed written reports.
  • Contribute to the identification of potential causes of fires, focusing on indicators of deliberate ignition.
  • Liaise with internal teams, emergency services, and external agencies as directed.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to all relevant legal and procedural guidelines.
  • Undertake continuous professional development and stay updated with best practices in fire investigation.
  • Support public awareness campaigns on fire safety and arson prevention.

Required Skills

  • A keen interest in fire science, forensics, and criminal investigation.
  • Exceptional observational skills and a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for report writing and interviewing.

  • Possession of a full, clean UK driving license.
  • Right to work in the UK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English, Mathematics, and a Science subject.
  • Basic proficiency in IT applications, including word processing and data entry.
  • Previous experience in a role requiring attention to detail or public interaction.
  • An understanding of health and safety regulations.
