Job Description
We are seeking an experienced and passionate Ship Captain (Master 5) to lead our tourism operations on the stunning Gippsland Lakes. This is a high-reward role for a professional mariner who is not only skilled in vessel operation and safety but also possesses a keen understanding of customer service and local tourism. The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe navigation of our passenger vessels, ensuring an enjoyable and educational experience for all guests, and maintaining the highest standards of maritime practice. You will be a key ambassador for our company, helping to create unforgettable memories for visitors exploring one of Australia’s most beautiful waterways.
Key Responsibilities
- Safely operate and navigate passenger vessels within the Gippsland Lakes system according to maritime regulations and company policies.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all passengers and crew on board at all times.
- Conduct pre-departure checks, routine maintenance, and post-trip inspections of the vessel and equipment.
- Provide engaging and informative commentary to passengers about the local environment, history, and wildlife.
- Manage onboard crew, delegating tasks and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Respond effectively to emergencies, implementing established safety and emergency procedures.
- Maintain accurate logbooks, records, and reports as required by maritime authorities and company policy.
- Adhere to all environmental regulations, protecting the pristine Gippsland ecosystem.
- Deliver exceptional customer service, ensuring a positive and memorable experience for every guest.
Required Skills
- Current Master 5 (Med 5) certification.
- Current Marine Engine Driver Grade 3 (MED 3) certification or equivalent.
- Minimum 24 months of experience as a coxswain or master on commercial vessels.
- Demonstrated experience in passenger vessel operations.
- Thorough knowledge of maritime safety regulations and procedures.
- Excellent navigation and vessel handling skills.
- Strong leadership and communication abilities.
- Current First Aid and CPR certification.
- A genuine passion for customer service and tourism.
Preferred Qualifications
- Local knowledge of the Gippsland Lakes and surrounding areas.
- Experience with vessel maintenance and minor repairs.
- Advanced First Aid certification.
- Tourism or hospitality experience.
