Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and meticulous Payroll Manager to lead our payroll department in Gateshead. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of payroll processing, ensuring accuracy, compliance with all relevant legislation, and efficient delivery of services. You will manage a small team, implement best practices, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our payroll systems and processes. This role requires a strong understanding of UK payroll regulations, excellent leadership skills, and a commitment to precision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the end-to-end payroll process for all employees, ensuring timely and accurate payments.
  • Ensure full compliance with UK payroll legislation, HMRC requirements, and internal policies.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of payroll specialists, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
  • Oversee pension administration, statutory payments (SMP, SSP, SPP), and year-end processing.
  • Reconcile payroll data, prepare payroll reports, and resolve any discrepancies.
  • Work closely with HR and Finance departments to ensure seamless integration and data consistency.
  • Implement and maintain robust payroll systems and procedures, identifying areas for improvement and efficiency.
  • Handle all payroll-related queries from employees and external bodies.
  • Stay updated with changes in payroll legislation and advise on necessary adjustments.

Required Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a dedicated payroll management role within the UK.
  • In-depth knowledge of UK payroll legislation, tax codes, and HMRC reporting.
  • Proven experience with payroll software systems (e.g., Sage Payroll, SAP, Workday).
  • Strong leadership and team management abilities.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organisational skills.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CIPP (Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals) qualification.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience with HRIS integration and data migration projects.
  • Familiarity with larger organisational payroll structures and multiple pay frequencies.
