Job Description
Join the Sobeys Inc. team as a Packaging Design & Structural Intern specializing in corrugated materials. This exciting internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the fast-paced retail food industry. You will work closely with our experienced packaging design team, contributing to the development of innovative and sustainable packaging solutions for our wide range of private label products. This role is ideal for an aspiring designer or engineer eager to apply theoretical knowledge in a practical, real-world setting, focusing specifically on the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal of corrugated packaging.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior packaging designers in the conceptualization and development of new corrugated packaging structures.
- Create 2D and 3D mock-ups and prototypes of packaging designs for various products.
- Conduct research on new packaging materials, sustainable alternatives, and industry trends related to corrugated solutions.
- Support the team in preparing design specifications and technical drawings for production.
- Participate in design reviews, providing input and learning from constructive feedback.
- Help maintain and organize the packaging material library and design archives.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including marketing, supply chain, and product development, to ensure packaging meets all requirements.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's degree or Diploma program in Industrial Design, Packaging Engineering, Graphic Design, or a related field.
- Basic proficiency with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or CAD software (e.g., ArtiosCAD is a plus, but not required for entry).
- Strong eagerness to learn about packaging materials, structures, and processes.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Detail-oriented with a strong ability to follow instructions.
- Enthusiasm for sustainability and innovative design solutions.
Preferred Qualifications
- A portfolio showcasing academic projects, design exercises, or personal creative work (does not need professional experience).
- Familiarity with various corrugated board types and their applications.
- Understanding of basic manufacturing processes for packaging.
