Job Description
Are you passionate about sustainable agriculture and eager to learn the ropes of organic farming? The University at Albany is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual for an Entry-Level Organic Farm Assistant position. This full-time role offers hands-on experience in all aspects of organic farming practices, from seed to harvest. No prior experience is required; we provide comprehensive training for dedicated individuals committed to ecological stewardship. You will play a vital role in cultivating healthy food while minimizing environmental impact, supporting our mission of education and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting various organic crops.
- Prepare garden beds, apply organic fertilizers, and manage soil health.
- Operate and maintain basic farm equipment and tools safely.
- Help with pest and disease management using organic methods.
- Participate in post-harvest handling, washing, and packaging of produce.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of farm areas, tools, and storage facilities.
- Contribute to composting and other waste reduction initiatives.
- Support educational workshops and community engagement events as needed.
- Monitor crop health and report any issues to the farm manager.
Required Skills
- Strong interest in organic farming, sustainable agriculture, or environmental science.
- Ability to perform physical labor outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and follow instructions diligently.
- Good communication skills and a positive attitude.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous volunteer experience on a farm or garden.
- Basic knowledge of plant biology or ecology.
- A valid driver's license.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
