Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Marine Patrol Assistant to support our public safety efforts on Independence’s waterways. This entry-level position offers comprehensive training for individuals passionate about outdoor safety and community service. You will assist Marine Patrol Officers in ensuring the safety of recreational boaters, responding to incidents, and maintaining public order on the water. All necessary watercraft and safety equipment will be provided. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals looking to start a career in public safety and gain valuable experience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Marine Patrol Officers in conducting routine patrols of city lakes and waterways.
  • Operate and maintain department watercraft under supervision.
  • Provide information and assistance to the public regarding water safety regulations.
  • Help respond to marine emergencies, accidents, or other incidents on the water.
  • Assist with basic maintenance and inspection of marine equipment.
  • Conduct safety checks on watercraft and report any violations.
  • Maintain accurate records of patrol activities and incidents.
  • Participate in community outreach and educational programs on water safety.
  • Ensure compliance with all city and state boating regulations.

Required Skills

  • Strong swimming abilities and comfort in water environments.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Valid state-issued driver's license.
  • Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, stand, walk, and operate watercraft for extended periods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience with small watercraft operation (e.g., kayaks, canoes, small motorboats).
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain upon hire).
  • Completion of a recognized boating safety course.
