Job Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Marine Chief Engineer to oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of our vessels’ engineering departments. This pivotal role requires a strong leader with exceptional technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and the ability to manage complex machinery and systems in an international maritime environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the optimal performance and maintenance of all onboard machinery, equipment, and systems, adhering to international regulations and company policies. This role is based at our Leigh office for administrative purposes, with significant periods of work at sea.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and lead the vessel's engineering department, ensuring the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental compliance.
- Oversee the operation, maintenance, and repair of all main and auxiliary machinery, including propulsion, power generation, and cargo systems.
- Develop and implement planned maintenance schedules, ensuring all equipment is maintained in optimal working condition.
- Manage inventories of spare parts, consumables, and bunkers, ensuring cost-effective procurement and usage.
- Ensure strict adherence to all international maritime regulations (e.g., MARPOL, SOLAS), classification society rules, and company SMS procedures.
- Conduct regular inspections and audits of engineering spaces and equipment.
- Mentor and train junior engineering officers and ratings, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Prepare and submit comprehensive reports on machinery performance, maintenance activities, and incidents.
- Manage the vessel's budget for the engineering department, ensuring financial efficiency.
Required Skills
- Class 1 Marine Engineer Officer's Certificate of Competency (Motor and/or Steam Unlimited)
- Extensive experience (minimum 8 years) as a Chief Engineer on relevant vessel types (e.g., tankers, cargo, offshore support vessels)
- Profound knowledge of marine engineering systems, including diesel engines, propulsion systems, power generation, and auxiliary machinery
- Strong leadership, management, and communication skills
- In-depth understanding of international maritime regulations (STCW, MARPOL, SOLAS) and ISM Code
- Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
- Valid STCW certification and relevant endorsements
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or related field
- Experience with specific vessel types within our fleet (e.g., LNG carriers, heavy lift vessels)
- Familiarity with planned maintenance systems (PMS) software
- Experience with environmental management systems and energy efficiency initiatives
