Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Locum Consultant to join our dedicated medical team at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. This is a crucial opportunity to contribute to high-quality patient care within a dynamic, challenging, and supportive environment. The successful candidate will provide specialist medical expertise, participate in ward rounds, clinics, and on-call rotas, and play a vital role in the teaching and supervision of junior medical staff, ensuring the continuous development of our clinical services.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert clinical care to patients within your specialty, adhering to best practice guidelines and Trust policies.
  • Undertake ward rounds, outpatient clinics, and theatre sessions as required, maintaining efficiency and patient safety.
  • Participate in the on-call rota for your specialty, providing timely and effective emergency care.
  • Supervise, teach, and mentor junior medical staff, including registrars and residents, fostering their professional growth.
  • Actively contribute to clinical governance, audit, and service development initiatives to enhance patient outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and timely patient records in line with professional and Trust standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure holistic and integrated patient care pathways.
  • Engage in continuous professional development and fulfill all revalidation requirements to maintain professional standards.

Required Skills

  • GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise
  • Inclusion on the Specialist Register (or equivalent within 6 months of CCT in the relevant specialty)
  • Significant experience as a Consultant in the relevant medical specialty
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous professional development and lifelong learning
  • Advanced clinical decision-making abilities and problem-solving skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD) relevant to the medical specialty
  • Experience in clinical leadership or management roles within an NHS setting
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level, with evidence of teaching effectiveness
  • Active participation in research or clinical trials, with publications in peer-reviewed journals
