Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and visionary Library Director / Head Archivist to lead our library services and archival collections. This pivotal role involves overseeing the strategic development, management, and preservation of our extensive resources, ensuring their accessibility and relevance to the public and researchers. The successful candidate will drive initiatives in digital preservation, community outreach, and staff development, all while upholding the highest standards of archival practice and library management. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for library and archival services, aligning with community needs and council objectives.
  • Oversee the acquisition, cataloguing, preservation, and accessibility of all library materials and archival collections.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage a team of librarians, archivists, and support staff, fostering a collaborative and professional environment.
  • Manage the departmental budget, ensuring efficient allocation of resources and compliance with financial regulations.
  • Drive digital preservation initiatives, including the digitization of historical records and the implementation of modern archival systems.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with local historical societies, educational institutions, and community organizations.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legal and ethical standards in library and archival practice, including data protection and copyright.
  • Prepare reports, grant applications, and presentations for council members, stakeholders, and the public.
  • Promote the library and archive's resources through outreach programs, exhibitions, and public events.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in library science, archival management, and digital humanities.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, Information Science, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a leadership role within a library or archival institution.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of archival principles, preservation techniques, and digital asset management.
  • Strong understanding of library management systems and information technologies.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Experience with budget management and resource allocation.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse communities and stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant field.
  • Membership in a professional archival or library association (e.g., ARA, CILIP).
  • Experience with grant writing and fundraising.
  • Familiarity with local history and heritage of Hertfordshire.
  • Proficiency in additional languages relevant to historical research.
