Job Description

Are you passionate about working outdoors and making a tangible difference to your local community? Chester City Council is seeking enthusiastic individuals to join our Environmental Services team as a City Arborist Assistant / Tree Surgeon Trainee. This is an incredible opportunity for someone with no prior experience in arboriculture, as full training will be provided to help you develop into a skilled tree surgeon. You will work alongside experienced professionals, learning the vital skills required for tree care, maintenance, and planting within the city’s public spaces, parks, and conservation areas. Key Responsibilities

  • Assist qualified arborists and tree surgeons with various tree care operations, including pruning, felling, planting, and disease management.
  • Learn to operate and maintain a range of arborist equipment safely and efficiently under supervision.
  • Prepare work sites, including setting up safety barriers and signage.
  • Perform ground-based duties, such as clearing brush, chipping wood, and removing debris.
  • Support the team in emergency tree work and storm damage response.
  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety regulations and best practices.
  • Contribute to the upkeep and inventory of tools and equipment.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development programs.

Required Skills

  • No prior experience in arboriculture or tree surgery required; full training provided.
  • A strong willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Reliable, punctual, and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic communication skills.
  • Valid UK driving licence (desirable but not essential for initial application, must be willing to obtain).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic knowledge of trees, plants, or horticulture.
  • Experience in manual labour or outdoor work.
  • First Aid certification.
  • Awareness of health and safety practices.
