Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Bookbinder to join our dedicated team. This role demands a profound understanding of traditional bookbinding techniques, an artistic eye, and meticulous attention to detail. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, from restoring antique volumes to creating bespoke modern bindings, all while adhering to the highest standards of craftsmanship and conservation ethics. This is an on-site role in our Joondalup studio, requiring hands-on expertise with various tools and materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive restoration and conservation of damaged books, including rebinding, rebacking, and paper repair.
  • Execute traditional binding techniques such as full leather, half leather, cloth, and paper bindings.
  • Create bespoke custom bindings for new works, incorporating client specifications and design elements.
  • Select appropriate materials (leathers, papers, cloths, adhesives) ensuring longevity and aesthetic quality.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of bookbinding equipment and tools, both traditional and modern.
  • Assess the condition of books and develop appropriate treatment plans in consultation with senior staff.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workspace.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of best practices in traditional bookbinding and conservation.
  • Occasionally assist with client consultations regarding binding options and material choices.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in traditional bookbinding or conservation.
  • Demonstrable proficiency in various traditional binding styles and repair techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of bookbinding materials and their properties (leathers, papers, threads, adhesives).
  • Exceptional manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
  • Keen eye for detail and aesthetic sensibility.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong problem-solving skills related to structural and aesthetic book repair.
  • Understanding of conservation ethics and principles.
  • Proficiency in basic hand tools used in bookbinding.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal qualification or apprenticeship in bookbinding, book conservation, or a related craft.
  • Experience with gold tooling and decorative binding techniques.
  • Familiarity with historical binding structures and materials.
  • Portfolio showcasing a range of traditional binding and restoration projects.
  • Experience in a studio or workshop environment.
