Job Description
We are seeking a diligent and enthusiastic Boat Builder (Mate) to join our skilled team in Henley-on-Thames. This entry to mid-level role is perfect for someone with foundational boat building skills looking to develop their expertise under the guidance of experienced craftsmen. You will assist in all aspects of boat construction, repair, and finishing, contributing to the creation and maintenance of high-quality vessels. Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior boat builders with all phases of boat construction, including hull and deck assembly, interior fitting, and exterior finishing.
- Perform general maintenance, repair, and restoration tasks on various types of yachts.
- Prepare surfaces for painting, varnishing, and gelcoat application, ensuring a high-quality finish.
- Measure, cut, and fit materials such as wood, fiberglass, and composite panels according to specifications.
- Install and secure components, hardware, and fixtures.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
- Learn and apply best practices in boat building techniques and safety procedures.
- Support team members and contribute to a collaborative workshop atmosphere.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 18 months) in boat building, carpentry, or a related trade.
- Basic knowledge of marine construction materials and techniques (fiberglass, wood, composites).
- Proficiency with hand and power tools relevant to boat building.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and plans.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to quality craftsmanship.
- Good physical stamina and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Boat Building, Marine Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with gelcoat repairs and finishing.
- Familiarity with various marine systems (electrical, plumbing, mechanical).
- Previous experience working with luxury yachts.
