Job Description

We are seeking a compassionate, reliable, and discreet individual to join our team as a Government Women & Children’s Shelter Assistant. This secure role is pivotal in ensuring the smooth, safe, and supportive operation of our confidential shelter. You will play a crucial part in the daily lives of residents, providing direct assistance, maintaining a welcoming atmosphere, and upholding the highest standards of security and confidentiality. This role requires a strong sense of responsibility, empathy, and the ability to work effectively within a structured, supportive framework. Full background checks will be conducted.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct support and assistance to women and children residing in the shelter, ensuring their comfort and well-being.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organised environment within the shelter premises.
  • Assist with administrative tasks, including record-keeping, intake procedures, and resource allocation.
  • Monitor shelter access and ensure adherence to strict security protocols to safeguard residents.
  • Uphold the highest levels of confidentiality regarding residents' identities and personal circumstances.
  • Support residents with daily routines, access to services, and recreational activities.
  • Respond to resident queries and concerns with sensitivity and professionalism, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff members and external agencies to ensure holistic support for residents.
  • Participate in regular training and team meetings to enhance skills and service delivery.

Required Skills

  • Proven ability to maintain strict confidentiality and discretion.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with a compassionate approach.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic IT proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite, email).
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles and practices.
  • Willingness to undergo enhanced DBS checks and relevant security clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a support, care, or administrative role, particularly within a secure or sensitive environment.
  • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent in Health & Social Care, Childcare, or a related field.
  • First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of local community resources and support networks for vulnerable individuals.
