Job Description

McGill University Library is seeking an accomplished and visionary Library Director / Head Archivist to lead our esteemed team. This pivotal role requires a strategic leader with a deep understanding of library science, archival principles, and information management. The successful candidate will oversee the comprehensive operations of our library and archives, drive innovation in service delivery, and ensure the preservation and accessibility of our unique collections for future generations. Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for all library and archival operations, staff, and resources.
  • Manage the acquisition, cataloging, preservation, and access to library materials and archival collections.
  • Develop and implement innovative services and technologies to enhance user experience and research capabilities.
  • Oversee budgetary planning, resource allocation, and grant applications to support library and archival initiatives.
  • Lead, mentor, and evaluate a team of librarians, archivists, and support staff.
  • Represent the library and archives within the university, to external stakeholders, and in professional communities.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards for information access and privacy.
  • Develop long-term preservation strategies for digital and physical archival materials.

Required Skills

  • Master's degree in Library Science (MLS) or Archival Studies from an ALA-accredited program or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 7 years of progressive leadership experience in a library or archival setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in library systems, digital repositories, and archival management software.
  • Strong financial management and budgeting skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team-building abilities.
  • Proficiency in English and French (oral and written).
  • Proven ability to develop and implement strategic plans.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in a related field.
  • Experience with international library consortia or archival networks.
  • Proven track record of successful grant writing and fundraising.
  • Familiarity with Canadian archival standards and practices.
  • Experience working in a university or research-intensive environment.
