Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Sommelier / Wine Director to elevate the wine experience at Auberge Le Clos Saint-Denis. This pivotal role requires a deep understanding of viticulture, wine regions, and food pairing, coupled with exceptional leadership and guest service skills. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of our wine program, from cellar management and inventory to staff training and guest recommendations. Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, maintain, and continuously refine a comprehensive wine list that complements the restaurant's culinary vision.
  • Manage all aspects of wine inventory, including ordering, receiving, stocking, and cellar organization to ensure optimal storage conditions.
  • Provide expert wine recommendations to guests, enhancing their dining experience through informed and personalized suggestions.
  • Conduct regular wine training sessions for all front-of-house staff, educating them on varietals, regions, and service protocols.
  • Oversee wine service during all operational hours, ensuring impeccable presentation and adherence to service standards.
  • Monitor wine costs, sales, and profitability, implementing strategies to maximize revenue and control expenses.
  • Cultivate relationships with wine suppliers and distributors to source unique and high-quality selections.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of global wine trends, new releases, and industry developments.
  • Handle guest inquiries and feedback regarding wine with professionalism and grace.
  • Ensure compliance with all local and national liquor licensing regulations.

Required Skills

  • Minimum WSET Level 3 certification or equivalent (e.g., CMS Certified Sommelier, ISG Diploma).
  • At least 5 years of progressive experience as a Sommelier or Wine Director in a high-end restaurant or luxury hotel setting.
  • Extensive knowledge of international wine regions, varietals, vintages, and food pairing principles.
  • Proven ability to manage a sophisticated wine cellar and inventory.
  • Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Strong financial acumen with experience in cost control and revenue generation.
  • Proficiency in English and French (written and spoken) is highly desirable.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Court of Master Sommeliers Advanced Sommelier certification or higher.
  • Experience with menu engineering and wine list software.
  • Demonstrated success in building and maintaining a prestigious wine program.
  • Fluency in additional languages.
