Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and physically capable individual to join our Canal & Waterway Maintenance Crew. This outdoor government role involves maintaining the aesthetic and functional integrity of Newark’s canals, rivers, and surrounding areas. You will perform a variety of tasks crucial for environmental preservation, public safety, and recreational access. This position requires working primarily outdoors in various weather conditions, utilizing hand tools and light machinery, and collaborating effectively within a team environment. Full training on specific waterway maintenance techniques and safety protocols will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning and removal of debris, litter, and vegetation from canals and waterways.
  • Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light equipment such as weed whackers, mowers, and small boats.
  • Conduct minor repairs to canal banks, pathways, and associated structures.
  • Assist with erosion control projects and habitat restoration efforts.
  • Monitor water quality and report any unusual observations or potential hazards.
  • Participate in emergency response efforts related to waterway blockages or environmental incidents.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and departmental procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.

Required Skills

  • Ability to work effectively outdoors in various weather conditions (heat, cold, rain).
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift up to 50 lbs, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
  • Basic knowledge of hand tools and willingness to learn to operate light machinery.
  • Strong work ethic and reliability.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Commitment to public service and environmental stewardship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in outdoor labor, landscaping, or maintenance.
  • Experience with small engine operation (e.g., chainsaws, pumps).

  • Familiarity with Newark's local geography and waterways.
