Job Description
Embark on an exciting career path with the York Region Government as a Local Authority Transport Planner Trainee. This is a unique opportunity for an enthusiastic and detail-oriented individual to learn the fundamentals of urban transport planning within a dynamic public sector environment. No prior experience in transport planning is required; we are looking for candidates with a passion for community development and a strong desire to learn. You will receive comprehensive training and mentorship to develop the skills necessary to contribute to impactful transportation projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist senior planners with data collection and analysis for transportation studies.
- Learn to interpret and apply transportation policies, guidelines, and regulations.
- Prepare basic reports, presentations, and mapping materials.
- Participate in project meetings and site visits, observing planning processes.
- Support the development of transportation models and forecasts under supervision.
- Contribute to public engagement activities and stakeholder consultations.
- Undertake research on best practices in sustainable transportation and urban mobility.
- Perform general administrative duties to support the Transport Planning team.
Required Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Keen interest in urban planning, transportation, or public policy.
- Demonstrated eagerness to learn and adapt to new concepts.
- Eligibility to work in Canada.
Preferred Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in Urban Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Environmental Studies, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Familiarity with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS) or data visualization tools.
- Experience with data entry or research projects.
- Knowledge of local government operations or community services.
