Job Description

National Highways is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated individuals to join our team as Trainee Highway Inspectors. As a Trainee, you will receive comprehensive training and mentorship, equipping you with the knowledge and practical experience required to become a skilled Highway Inspector. No prior experience in highway inspection is required; we are looking for candidates with a keen eye for detail, a commitment to safety, and a willingness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate actively in all provided training programs and mentorship sessions.
- Learn to conduct routine inspections of highways, footways, and associated assets to identify defects and hazards.
- Understand and apply relevant safety standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Assist in recording and reporting findings accurately using digital tools and systems.
- Learn to assess the severity and urgency of defects, making recommendations for appropriate remedial action.
- Shadow experienced inspectors to gain practical insight into defect identification, reporting, and management.
- Adhere to all health and safety procedures while working on or near the highway.
- Contribute to maintaining high standards of road network safety and integrity.
Required Skills
- Full UK driving license (essential for site visits).
- Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Eagerness to learn and develop new skills.
- Commitment to safety and adherence to procedures.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physical fitness to work outdoors in various weather conditions and walk significant distances.
Preferred Qualifications
- A strong interest in civil engineering, construction, or transportation infrastructure.
- Basic IT literacy (for using inspection software and reporting tools).
- Previous experience in outdoor work or roles requiring attention to detail is a plus, but not required.
