Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Local Council Homeless Outreach Worker to join our team in Port Orange, FL. This vital role involves actively engaging with individuals experiencing homelessness in the community, building trust, and connecting them with essential services and resources. You will be instrumental in identifying needs, providing immediate support, and guiding individuals towards sustainable housing solutions, healthcare, mental health services, employment assistance, and other critical programs. This position requires empathy, resilience, excellent communication skills, and a strong commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of vulnerable populations. You will work both independently and as part of a supportive team, contributing directly to the welfare of our community.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular outreach to individuals experiencing homelessness in various community settings (e.g., encampments, streets, public spaces).
- Build rapport and trust with clients through compassionate and non-judgmental engagement.
- Assess immediate needs, including shelter, food, clothing, and medical attention.
- Provide crisis intervention and de-escalation support as needed.
- Connect clients to appropriate resources, including emergency shelters, housing programs, substance abuse treatment, mental health services, and medical care.
- Assist clients with navigating complex service systems and completing application forms.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions and service referrals.
- Collaborate effectively with internal departments, community partners, law enforcement, and other service providers.
- Advocate on behalf of clients to ensure access to necessary services and fair treatment.
- Participate in community meetings and initiatives related to homelessness prevention and support.
Required Skills
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to engage diverse populations.
- Demonstrated empathy, patience, and non-judgmental approach.
- Ability to work independently in unstructured environments while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer applications.
- Knowledge of local community resources and social services or willingness to learn quickly.
- Valid Florida Driver's License and reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Human Services, or related field.
- Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in outreach, case management, or social services, particularly with vulnerable populations.
- Bilingual proficiency (e.g., Spanish/English).
- CPR and First Aid certification.
