Job Description

The Tubman Museum is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Art Restoration & Conservation Intern to join our team. This entry-level internship provides an unparalleled opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the preservation and conservation of diverse art and historical artifacts. Under the direct supervision of our experienced conservation staff, the intern will learn fundamental conservation techniques, assist with object handling, documentation, and environmental monitoring, and contribute to the long-term care of our valuable collections. Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior conservators with various conservation treatments and projects.
  • Perform detailed condition reporting and photographic documentation of objects.
  • Aid in the safe handling, packing, and movement of artworks and artifacts.
  • Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light levels) in galleries and storage areas.
  • Conduct basic cleaning and rehousing of collection items under supervision.
  • Assist with research related to conservation materials and methods.
  • Participate in preventive conservation initiatives, including integrated pest management.
  • Maintain conservation lab supplies and equipment, ensuring a clean and organized workspace.

Required Skills

  • Strong interest in art history, museum studies, or cultural heritage preservation.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and meticulous work ethic.
  • Ability to follow instructions precisely and work carefully with delicate objects.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team.
  • Eagerness to learn new techniques and adapt to changing tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., Art History, Museum Studies, Chemistry, Fine Arts).
  • Basic knowledge of art materials and their degradation processes.
  • Experience with digital photography and image editing software.
  • Prior volunteer or intern experience in a museum or cultural institution is a plus, but not required.
