Job Description
The Baltimore City Police Department is seeking a highly motivated and academically driven Criminal Justice & Criminology Intern to join our team. This entry-level internship offers a unique opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience within a major metropolitan law enforcement agency. Interns will observe and support various departmental functions, gaining insight into police operations, criminal investigations, community engagement, and the broader criminal justice system. This role is designed to provide hands-on learning and professional development for individuals passionate about law enforcement and public service. Full training and mentorship will be provided.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist department personnel with administrative tasks, data entry, and record keeping.
- Observe police operations, community outreach programs, and court proceedings (where appropriate and under supervision).
- Conduct research on criminal justice topics, best practices, and policy initiatives.
- Support the development of educational materials or presentations for internal training or community engagement.
- Participate in departmental meetings and briefings to understand strategic priorities and operational challenges.
- Shadow officers and detectives to gain firsthand exposure to daily law enforcement duties.
- Assist in organizing and maintaining files related to ongoing projects or investigations.
- Contribute to special projects as assigned, aligning with departmental needs and intern interests.
Required Skills
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from an accredited college or university with a major in Criminal Justice, Criminology, Sociology, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
- Strong interest in law enforcement, public safety, and the criminal justice system.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ethical conduct and a commitment to public service.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior volunteer experience or coursework related to law enforcement or community service.
- Knowledge of local criminal justice issues or policies in Maryland.
- Bilingual proficiency is a plus.
