Job Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join our team as an Entry-Level Public Facilities Handyman / Maintenance worker. This is an excellent opportunity for individuals with little to no prior experience in trades who are eager to learn and develop valuable skills in facility maintenance. You will work under the guidance of experienced professionals, assisting with a variety of tasks crucial to the upkeep of Rochester’s public buildings and grounds. Full training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist senior maintenance staff with routine repairs and preventative maintenance tasks.
  • Perform basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting duties as directed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of facilities and report any issues or damage.
  • Help maintain cleanliness and orderliness of public facilities and surrounding grounds.
  • Operate and maintain basic hand and power tools safely.
  • Respond to minor service requests and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Adhere to all safety regulations and departmental policies.
  • Learn and apply new skills and techniques related to facility maintenance and repair.

Required Skills

  • Willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and stand for extended periods.
  • Valid New York State Driver's License or ability to obtain one within a specified timeframe.
  • Reliable and punctual attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Some prior experience with basic hand tools or household repairs.
  • Interest in pursuing a career in skilled trades.
