Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Wildlife Biologist or Ecologist to join our dynamic environmental consulting team. This position is based in Duncan, British Columbia, and offers international sponsorship for eligible candidates. The successful applicant will contribute to a diverse range of projects, focusing on wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, ecological impact assessments, and conservation planning. You will be instrumental in collecting and analyzing ecological data, preparing technical reports, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This role requires a strong understanding of wildlife ecology principles, excellent field skills, and a commitment to scientific excellence. You will work on projects spanning various ecosystems, from terrestrial forests to aquatic environments, providing critical insights for sustainable development and conservation initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct wildlife field surveys using established methodologies, including camera trapping, acoustic monitoring, direct observation, and sign surveys.
- Perform habitat assessments and classification, identifying critical areas for various species.
- Collect, organize, and analyze ecological data using statistical software and GIS tools.
- Prepare comprehensive technical reports, proposals, and presentations for clients and regulatory bodies.
- Assist in the development and implementation of environmental management plans and mitigation strategies.
- Ensure project activities comply with local, provincial, federal, and international environmental regulations.
- Collaborate effectively with project managers, senior scientists, and other team members.
- Provide scientific input and advice on wildlife and ecological matters to support project development and decision-making.
- Participate in client meetings and stakeholder engagements as required.
- Maintain accurate and detailed field notes and project documentation.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in wildlife biology or ecological consulting.
- Demonstrated experience with various wildlife survey techniques and habitat assessment methods.
- Proficiency in data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Strong technical report writing and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging field conditions.
- Knowledge of Canadian environmental legislation and regulations pertinent to wildlife and habitat protection.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel for fieldwork.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline.
- Professional biologist designation (e.g., RPBio in BC) or eligibility for registration.
- Experience with GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) for spatial data analysis and mapping.
- Familiarity with wildlife species common to British Columbia and broader North America.
- Experience with environmental impact assessment processes.
- Proficiency in statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS).
- Experience working on projects involving Indigenous communities and Traditional Ecological Knowledge.
