Job Description
Join Stantec as a Plumbing & Fire Protection Engineer in Iqaluit, Nunavut, and contribute to vital infrastructure projects that enhance community well-being in Canada’s Arctic. This is a unique opportunity for a skilled engineer to apply their expertise in a challenging and rewarding environment. You will be responsible for the design, analysis, and implementation of plumbing and fire protection systems for a diverse portfolio of projects, including commercial, institutional, and residential buildings, often in extreme cold climates. Key Responsibilities
- Perform plumbing and fire protection system design, including sanitary, storm, domestic water, medical gas, and fire suppression systems (sprinklers, standpipes).
- Conduct hydraulic calculations, pipe sizing, and equipment selection.
- Prepare technical specifications, reports, and detailed design drawings.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and local regulations (e.g., National Building Code of Canada, NFPA standards).
- Collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams, architects, and clients to integrate plumbing and fire protection systems with overall building designs.
- Participate in site visits, construction administration, and commissioning activities to ensure design intent is met.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff as required.
- Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables, ensuring high-quality outputs.
Required Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Minimum 3 years of progressive experience in plumbing and fire protection system design.
- Eligibility for professional engineering registration (P.Eng.) in Canada, or equivalent international professional designation.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit MEP, and other relevant design software.
- Strong knowledge of National Building Code of Canada and NFPA standards.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Nunavut or another Canadian province.
- Experience with projects in cold climates or remote locations.
- Familiarity with LEED or other sustainable building design principles.
- Experience with specialized fire suppression systems (e.g., clean agent, foam systems).
- Bilingualism (English and Inuktitut) is an asset.
