Job Description
The Sacramento Zoo is seeking a passionate and dedicated Zookeeper / Exotic Animal Specialist to join our animal care team. This vital role involves providing daily husbandry, enrichment, and exceptional care to a variety of exotic animal species, ensuring their health, safety, and well-being. You will be responsible for maintaining pristine habitats, observing animal behavior, and contributing to educational programs. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily animal husbandry duties including feeding, watering, cleaning, and sanitizing animal enclosures.
- Monitor animal health, behavior, and social dynamics, promptly reporting any changes or concerns to veterinary staff.
- Develop and implement species-appropriate enrichment programs to promote natural behaviors and physical activity.
- Assist with animal training programs using positive reinforcement techniques.
- Maintain detailed daily records of animal care, observations, and enclosure maintenance.
- Participate in habitat design, maintenance, and exhibit improvements.
- Engage with zoo visitors, providing educational insights and answering questions about animals and conservation.
- Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and animal handling procedures.
- Collaborate effectively with fellow zookeepers, veterinarians, and other zoo staff.
Required Skills
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in animal care at a zoological institution, aquarium, or wildlife sanctuary OR a relevant Bachelor's degree.
- Demonstrated knowledge of animal behavior, husbandry, and nutrition.
- Ability to observe and interpret animal behavior accurately.
- Strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
- Proficiency in record-keeping and basic computer applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
- Experience with operant conditioning and positive reinforcement training.
- First Aid and CPR certification.
- Prior experience handling venomous reptiles or dangerous mammals (with appropriate training/certifications).
