Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Welding Inspector / Metallurgist to join our dynamic team in Portland, ME. This critical role involves ensuring the quality, integrity, and safety of welded structures and metallic components through meticulous inspection and metallurgical analysis. You will be instrumental in upholding the highest standards in material science and engineering, contributing to projects across various industrial sectors. Key Responsibilities

  • Perform visual inspections and non-destructive testing (NDT) on welded components and materials according to specified codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive metallurgical analysis, including microstructural evaluation, hardness testing, and failure analysis.
  • Verify welding procedures (WPS) and welder qualifications (WPQ) to ensure compliance with industry standards such as AWS, ASME, and API.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, documentation, and certifications, accurately recording findings, deviations, and corrective actions.
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine appropriate inspection methods and acceptance criteria.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and fabrication teams to resolve quality issues and implement preventive measures.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on welding processes, material selection, and heat treatment.
  • Ensure all work is performed in adherence to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Participate in client meetings and audits as the subject matter expert for welding and metallurgy.

Required Skills

  • Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or equivalent (e.g., CSWIP 3.1/3.2)
  • Proficiency in various NDT methods (PT, MT, UT, RT interpretation)
  • Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, material science, and failure analysis
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, welding symbols, and specifications
  • Knowledge of industry codes and standards (AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, API 1104, etc.)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite for reporting and documentation
  • Problem-solving abilities and attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Welding Engineering, or a related field
  • ASNT Level II certification in multiple NDT methods (UT, RT)
  • Experience in shipbuilding, oil & gas, power generation, or heavy manufacturing industries
  • Familiarity with various welding processes (SMAW, GMAW, GTAW, FCAW)
  • Experience with advanced material testing techniques
