Job Description

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Waste Education Officer to join our dynamic team. This pivotal role involves developing and delivering engaging educational programs and initiatives that promote waste reduction, recycling, and sustainable waste management practices across the Newcastle community. You will be instrumental in fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among residents, schools, and businesses, contributing directly to our city’s sustainability goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver innovative waste education programs and workshops for various community groups, schools, and businesses.
  • Organise and participate in community events, festivals, and outreach activities to raise awareness about waste management issues.
  • Create and disseminate engaging educational resources, including brochures, presentations, digital content, and social media campaigns.
  • Provide expert advice and information to residents on recycling best practices, composting, illegal dumping prevention, and other waste-related topics.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs, making recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with internal council departments, external agencies, and community stakeholders to achieve waste minimisation objectives.
  • Prepare reports, presentations, and grant applications related to waste education initiatives.

Required Skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven ability to present complex information clearly and engagingly.
  • Demonstrated understanding of contemporary waste management principles, including the waste hierarchy and circular economy concepts.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in environmental education, community engagement, or a related field.
  • Proficiency in developing and delivering educational materials and programs for diverse audiences.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Current Australian Driver's License.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Education, Communications, or a related discipline.
  • Experience working within a local government environment.
  • Knowledge of relevant local and state environmental legislation and policies.
  • Current Working with Children Check (or willingness to obtain one).
