Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and organized Virtual Legal Aide to join our Public Defender’s Office team, working remotely from Corner Brook, NL. This full-time position offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to our mission of providing legal assistance to vulnerable populations. The Virtual Legal Aide will provide essential administrative and legal support to lawyers, ensuring smooth case management and efficient operation of our virtual office environment. This role is ideal for someone with strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a passion for public service, who thrives in a remote work setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist lawyers with case preparation, including document review and organization.
  • Draft and format legal correspondence, memos, and court documents.
  • Maintain and update client files, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
  • Schedule appointments, court dates, and virtual meetings.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, court staff, and other stakeholders via phone and email.
  • Perform legal research under the guidance of supervising attorneys.
  • Manage electronic filing systems and databases.
  • Support general administrative tasks to ensure efficient office operations.

Required Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and exercise discretion.
  • Familiarity with virtual communication tools (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team.
  • Minimum of 1 year of administrative or office support experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in legal administration, paralegal studies, or a related field.
  • Previous experience in a legal office or public service environment.
  • Understanding of legal terminology and court procedures.
  • Experience with legal case management software.
