Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Virologist to join our dynamic team in Bradford. The successful candidate will play a critical role in our infectious disease research and diagnostic efforts, focusing on the detection, characterization, and understanding of various viral pathogens. This position involves both laboratory-based research and routine diagnostic testing, contributing to our mission of advancing public health and safety. You will work within a state-of-the-art facility, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team of scientists and technicians.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform advanced viral detection and characterization using molecular and cell culture techniques.
- Develop and validate new diagnostic assays and research methodologies for viral pathogens.
- Conduct routine diagnostic testing for a range of viruses in clinical and environmental samples.
- Analyze and interpret complex experimental data, preparing comprehensive reports and presentations.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and adhere to stringent quality control standards.
- Operate and maintain specialized laboratory equipment, troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Contribute to the scientific literature through publications and conference presentations.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant safety regulations and ethical guidelines.
- Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, clinicians, and regulatory bodies.
- Provide expert advice and training to junior staff members as required.
Required Skills
- Ph.D. in Virology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience in virology research or diagnostics.
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques (PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, Sanger sequencing).
- Extensive experience with cell culture techniques, including viral propagation and titration.
- Demonstrated ability to design, execute, and analyze complex experiments.
- Strong understanding of viral pathogenesis, immunology, and epidemiology.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-doctoral experience in a relevant field.
- Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics tools for viral genomics.
- Familiarity with BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory practices and safety protocols.
- Experience in assay development and validation according to regulatory standards (e.g., ISO 15189).
- Knowledge of statistical software for data analysis.
