Job Description
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Translation & Interpreting Services Intern to join our team in Oxnard. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for individuals passionate about language and eager to gain practical experience in a healthcare setting. You will work closely with our existing language services team, supporting efforts to ensure clear and accurate communication between patients, families, and healthcare providers. Full training will be provided to help you understand healthcare terminology and the nuances of medical interpreting and translation. This internship is designed to give you hands-on experience and a foundational understanding of language services within a large health system.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the translation of patient education materials, consent forms, and other administrative documents from English into target languages (primarily Spanish).
- Shadow certified medical interpreters during patient encounters to observe best practices and learn medical terminology in context.
- Support the scheduling and coordination of interpreting services.
- Help maintain and update glossaries of medical terms and phrases.
- Participate in departmental meetings and training sessions to further develop language and professional skills.
- Conduct research on cultural nuances and language-specific communication strategies to improve patient care.
- Contribute to quality assurance checks of translated materials under supervision.
Required Skills
- Fluency in English and at least one other language (Spanish strongly preferred)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in both languages
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Eagerness to learn and adapt in a fast-paced healthcare setting
- High level of professionalism and discretion
Preferred Qualifications
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Translation, Linguistics, Communications, or a related field
- Basic understanding of medical terminology (or a strong interest in learning it)
- Prior volunteer experience in a healthcare or community service setting
