Job Description

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Trainee Highway Inspector to join our team in Knoxville, TN. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in a structured training program to learn about highway inspection techniques, materials, and safety protocols.
  • Assist experienced Highway Inspectors with on-site inspections of construction projects, maintenance activities, and existing infrastructure.
  • Learn to identify potential issues with road surfaces, bridges, drainage systems, and other highway components.
  • Document findings accurately, including measurements, observations, and photographic evidence, under supervision.
  • Familiarize yourself with project plans, specifications, and relevant state and federal regulations.
  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures while working in various outdoor and roadside environments.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, contractors, and the public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the inspection team and departmental goals.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Valid Tennessee Class D Driver’s License and a clean driving record.
  • Strong willingness to learn and adapt to new challenges.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
  • Basic observational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
  • Physical ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and traverse uneven terrain.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some experience in construction, labor, or a related field (not required, but beneficial).
  • Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated interest in civil engineering, construction, or public infrastructure.
  • Ability to read and interpret basic diagrams or blueprints.
