Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Trainee Environmental Health Officer. This is an entry-level position designed for candidates with no prior experience in environmental health. You will receive extensive on-the-job training and mentorship, learning the essential skills and knowledge required to protect public health and ensure compliance with environmental regulations within our vibrant community. Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in comprehensive training programs covering environmental health principles, regulations, and enforcement procedures.
  • Shadow experienced Environmental Health Officers on inspections, investigations, and public outreach activities.
  • Assist in the investigation of public health nuisances, food safety complaints, housing code violations, and other environmental health concerns.
  • Learn to conduct routine inspections of food establishments, housing units, public pools, and other facilities.
  • Assist with data collection, record-keeping, and report preparation under supervision.
  • Develop an understanding of local, state, and federal environmental health laws and ordinances.
  • Engage with community members to provide education and information on public health best practices.
  • Support the department in emergency response and public health initiatives as needed.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Strong desire to learn and develop a career in public health
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Valid Massachusetts Driver's License and reliable transportation (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Public Health, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry)
  • Demonstrated interest in public service and community well-being
  • Prior experience in customer service or public interaction roles
