Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a Trainee Environmental Health Officer. This is an entry-level position designed for candidates with no prior experience in environmental health. You will receive extensive on-the-job training and mentorship, learning the essential skills and knowledge required to protect public health and ensure compliance with environmental regulations within our vibrant community. Key Responsibilities
- Participate in comprehensive training programs covering environmental health principles, regulations, and enforcement procedures.
- Shadow experienced Environmental Health Officers on inspections, investigations, and public outreach activities.
- Assist in the investigation of public health nuisances, food safety complaints, housing code violations, and other environmental health concerns.
- Learn to conduct routine inspections of food establishments, housing units, public pools, and other facilities.
- Assist with data collection, record-keeping, and report preparation under supervision.
- Develop an understanding of local, state, and federal environmental health laws and ordinances.
- Engage with community members to provide education and information on public health best practices.
- Support the department in emergency response and public health initiatives as needed.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Strong desire to learn and develop a career in public health
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail
- Basic computer proficiency (Microsoft Office Suite)
- Valid Massachusetts Driver's License and reliable transportation (or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe)
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Public Health, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry)
- Demonstrated interest in public service and community well-being
- Prior experience in customer service or public interaction roles
