Job Description
The University of British Columbia – Beaty Biodiversity Museum is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Taxidermy & Museum Preparation Intern to join our team in Coquitlam. This invaluable internship offers a unique opportunity for individuals with a keen interest in natural history, museum science, and specimen preparation to gain hands-on experience in a professional museum setting. Under the direct supervision of experienced preparators and curators, the intern will learn fundamental taxidermy techniques, specimen preservation methods, and museum collection management practices. This is an entry-level position designed for learning and skill development; no prior professional experience in taxidermy is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist museum preparators and taxidermists with various stages of specimen preparation, including cleaning, skinning, and basic articulation.
- Learn and apply proper handling and preservation techniques for a variety of biological specimens (e.g., mammals, birds, fish, invertebrates).
- Support the maintenance and organization of preparation labs and collections storage areas, ensuring cleanliness and adherence to safety protocols.
- Assist with documentation and cataloging of new and existing specimens, including data entry and labeling.
- Observe and learn advanced taxidermy and specimen mounting techniques for exhibit and research purposes.
- Contribute to general museum collection care tasks as needed.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge in museum preparation and conservation.

Preferred Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant academic program (e.g., Biology, Zoology, Environmental Science, Museum Studies, Fine Arts, Sculpture).
- Previous experience in a laboratory, workshop, or art studio setting.
- Familiarity with scientific terminology.
