Job Description
Are you passionate about making a difference in children’s lives and love the outdoors? The YMCA of Newcastle is seeking enthusiastic and engaging Summer Camp Leaders for our upcoming seasonal programs. This is a fantastic opportunity to lead exciting activities, foster a positive environment, and create unforgettable memories for children aged 5-12. As a Camp Leader, you will facilitate a variety of outdoor games, creative crafts, and educational experiences, ensuring a safe, fun, and inclusive atmosphere. We are looking for individuals who are energetic, responsible, and ready to inspire the next generation during casual day shifts.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise groups of children aged 5-12 in various camp activities.
- Organise and facilitate engaging outdoor games, sports, arts and crafts, and educational programs.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of all campers at all times, adhering to YMCA policies and procedures.
- Act as a positive role model, promoting teamwork, respect, and fair play.
- Communicate effectively with campers, parents, and fellow staff members.
- Assist with the setup and cleanup of activity areas and camp facilities.
- Manage minor conflicts and behavioural issues with patience and professionalism.
- Administer basic first aid if necessary and report any incidents promptly.
Required Skills
- Experience working with children in a recreational, educational, or supervisory capacity (e.g., babysitting, coaching, volunteering)
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Enthusiasm for outdoor activities and working with children
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment
- Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or ability to obtain one
- Current First Aid and CPR certifications or willingness to obtain prior to start date
Preferred Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification or enrolment in Education, Recreation, Child Development, or a related field
- Experience with camp programs or structured children's activities
- Lifeguard certification or water safety experience (for water-based activities)
- Proficiency in additional languages
