Job Description

We are seeking highly motivated and detail-oriented individuals to serve as State/Provincial Highway Patrol Dispatchers for night shifts in Ann Arbor. This critical role involves acting as the primary communication link between the public and our Troopers, ensuring rapid and efficient response to emergencies and routine calls. You will be responsible for receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching calls for service, monitoring Trooper activities, and maintaining accurate records in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. Comprehensive training will be provided to ensure success in this vital public safety role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and prioritize incoming emergency and non-emergency calls from the public and other agencies.
  • Dispatch Michigan State Police Troopers to incidents, ensuring appropriate resources are deployed.
  • Monitor Trooper movements and status, maintaining constant communication and providing critical support.
  • Operate multi-channel radio systems, computer-aided dispatch (CAD) software, and other telecommunications equipment.
  • Maintain accurate records of calls, dispatch actions, and Trooper activities.
  • Provide pre-arrival instructions to callers in emergency situations.
  • Access and disseminate sensitive information from state and national databases (LEIN/NCIC) as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with other emergency services, public safety agencies, and internal departments.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with the utmost discretion.
  • Adhere to all departmental policies, procedures, and safety protocols.

Required Skills

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a high-pressure environment
  • Strong active listening skills and clear articulation
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry
  • Ability to remain calm and decisive during stressful situations
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and critical thinking
  • Strong geographical knowledge of the Ann Arbor area and Michigan highways
  • Flexibility to work night shifts, weekends, and holidays

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in dispatch, emergency services, or a call center environment
  • Certification in LEIN (Law Enforcement Information Network) or NCIC (National Crime Information Center)
  • Associate's degree or higher in criminal justice, public safety, or a related field
  • Typing speed of 40 WPM or higher
