Job Description

Marine Atlantic is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Ship Master / Captain to command our commercial vessels, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of voyages between Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. This critical leadership role involves overseeing all aspects of vessel management, crew performance, navigation, and adherence to international maritime regulations. The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional navigational expertise, strong leadership capabilities, and an unwavering commitment to safety. Key Responsibilities

  • Command and operate the vessel in accordance with all national and international maritime laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Ensure the safety of all personnel, passengers, vessel, cargo, and protection of the marine environment.
  • Lead, train, and manage the vessel's crew, fostering a culture of teamwork, discipline, and professional development.
  • Oversee navigation, piloting, and maneuvering in various weather conditions and port environments.
  • Manage vessel maintenance schedules, inspections, and ensure compliance with classification society rules.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for port authorities, pilots, and other external stakeholders.
  • Manage emergency procedures, drills, and crisis response, ensuring crew readiness and passenger safety.
  • Maintain accurate vessel records, logs, and reporting as required by regulations and company standards.
  • Ensure efficient cargo operations, including loading, stowage, and discharge.

Required Skills

  • Master Mariner Unlimited (or equivalent STCW II/2) Certificate of Competency.
  • Extensive experience commanding commercial vessels of similar size and complexity.
  • In-depth knowledge of ISM Code, ISPS Code, STCW, MARPOL, and other relevant maritime regulations.
  • Proficiency in electronic navigation systems (ECDIS, Radar, GPS).
  • Strong leadership, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent command of spoken and written English.
  • Valid medical certificate for seafarers.
  • Ability to obtain Canadian endorsements and relevant work permits/visas.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience operating passenger ferries or Ro-Pax vessels.
  • Familiarity with operations in North Atlantic waters.
  • Advanced Ship Handling certification.
  • Experience with integrated bridge systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Maritime Studies or related field.
