Sims Metal Management in Yonkers, NY, is seeking motivated individuals to join our team as a Scrap Metal Crane Operator Trainee. This entry-level position is perfect for someone eager to learn the ropes of heavy equipment operation within a dynamic and essential industry. You will receive comprehensive training on overhead cranes, mobile cranes, and other machinery used to process and move scrap metal, all while prioritizing safety and efficiency. No prior experience is necessary – we will provide all the tools and knowledge you need to succeed and become a skilled operator.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in a structured training program to learn the safe and efficient operation of various scrap metal handling cranes (e.g., overhead cranes, material handlers).
  • Assist experienced operators with daily tasks, including sorting, loading, and unloading scrap metal materials.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Perform pre-operational checks and basic maintenance tasks on equipment as trained.
  • Communicate effectively with ground crew and other team members to ensure smooth operations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions or safety hazards immediately.
