Job Description

Are you eager to start a career in heavy machinery operation but lack experience? PennState Recycling Solutions is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to join our team as a Scrap Metal Crane Operator (Trainee). This entry-level position is designed to teach you everything you need to know, from safety protocols to the skilled operation of heavy scrap metal handling cranes. You will work under the guidance of experienced operators, learning how to safely and efficiently sort, load, and unload various types of scrap metal. This is a hands-on learning environment where your willingness to learn and commitment to safety will be your greatest assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate actively in a comprehensive training program to learn the safe operation of various heavy equipment, specifically scrap metal handling cranes.
  • Assist experienced crane operators with daily tasks, including material handling, sorting, and organization of scrap metal.
  • Learn and adhere strictly to all company safety policies and procedures, as well as relevant environmental regulations.
  • Conduct pre-operation checks and basic maintenance tasks on equipment under supervision.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors regarding operational status and safety concerns.
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to learning and skill development.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety.
  • Eagerness and ability to learn new skills and operate heavy machinery.
  • Physical capability to perform demanding work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Reliable transportation to and from the job site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a general labor or industrial setting.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Forklift certification or previous experience operating other heavy equipment (not required, but a plus).
