Job Description
OMSI is seeking a passionate and dynamic Science Communicator with an Educational Focus to join our vibrant team. This role is crucial in bringing complex scientific concepts to life for diverse audiences, primarily focusing on K-12 students, families, and the general public. You will be responsible for developing and delivering engaging educational programs, demonstrations, and interpretive experiences both within the museum and through outreach initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess a strong scientific background, exceptional communication skills, and a genuine enthusiasm for inspiring the next generation of scientists and critical thinkers.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and deliver engaging science programs, workshops, and demonstrations for various age groups.
- Interpret scientific exhibits and collections for museum visitors, providing interactive and informative experiences.
- Conduct outreach programs at schools, community centers, and events, bringing science education directly to the public.
- Collaborate with educators, exhibit designers, and researchers to ensure scientific accuracy and pedagogical effectiveness of programs.
- Develop educational materials, including activity guides, handouts, and online content, to support learning objectives.
- Train and mentor volunteers and junior staff in science communication techniques.
- Evaluate program effectiveness and incorporate feedback for continuous improvement.
- Stay current with scientific discoveries and educational best practices.
Required Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to simplify complex scientific topics for general audiences.
- Strong presentation and public speaking abilities.
- Demonstrated experience in informal science education, museum education, or teaching.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse age groups, including children, teenagers, and adults.
- Solid understanding of scientific principles across various disciplines (e.g., biology, physics, chemistry, earth science).
- Creativity and innovation in program design and delivery.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or similar productivity tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or higher in a scientific discipline, science education, or a related field.
- Experience with curriculum development or instructional design.
- Familiarity with educational technology and digital communication platforms.
- Bilingual proficiency (especially Spanish) is a plus.
- Experience working in a museum or similar informal learning environment.
