Job Description

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate School Learning Support Officer (SLSO) to join a local public school in Mount Barker. In this vital role, you will provide essential support to students with diverse learning needs, assisting them in accessing the curriculum, developing social skills, and participating fully in school life. This position is perfect for individuals passionate about making a real difference in children’s educational journeys.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and small group support to students as directed by teaching staff.
  • Assist students with academic tasks, reinforcing concepts taught by the teacher.
  • Support students with social-emotional regulation and positive peer interactions.
  • Aid in the implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour management plans.
  • Supervise students during classroom activities, breaks, and excursions.
  • Prepare learning materials and assist with classroom organization.
  • Communicate effectively with teachers and other school staff regarding student progress and needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.

Required Skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children, particularly those with diverse learning needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively within a team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a positive attitude.
  • Basic understanding of child development and learning principles.
  • Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) or willingness to obtain one.
  • First Aid Certificate or willingness to obtain one.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certificate III or IV in Education Support or a related field.
  • Previous experience working in a school environment or with children with special needs.
  • Knowledge of various learning disabilities and support strategies.
